Student finance and additional income during the holidays

Do you get a student loan and do you want to earn extra during your summer vacation? Make sure that you do not earn more than € 13,856.11 (additional income limit 2015). Income that you receive outside the Netherlands also counts, for example when you start working as a tour guide, promotion employee or in a bar.

The additional earnings limit only applies to students who still fall under the old system of student finance. In the 2015 calendar year, the additional earnings limit may only be exceeded after 1 September.

What is seen as extra earnings?

What is seen as extra earnings?

Gross extra earnings means the income that falls under the (fiscal) aggregate income, for example wages, profits from business activities and benefits from savings or investments. This concerns income that you obtain in and outside the Netherlands.

How is the income of extra earnings determined?

Trio-loan looks at your aggregate income. If you do not file a tax return with the Tax Authorities, a check of your taxable wage is carried out by Trio-loan. It does not matter how you have earned income, for example, it may be income from employment, benefits or from your own company. If you earn more than the standard amount (€ 13,856.11) then the government sees you as financially independent and then you have to bear the costs for your studies yourself.

Which income does not count?

– Payment on the basis of the Participation

Act – Payment on the basis of the Supplementary

Benefits Act – Payment under the General Surviving Relatives Act (Anw)

– Study financing

– WMO

benefit – Child benefit for your children

Even before you have reached the additional earnings limit, you must stop both your student finance and your student travel product. You can cancel your student loan by logging. Here you can directly indicate that you want to receive a student loan again from January. The same applies if you have used up the right to a performance-related grant, but you are still entitled to a loan grant (also valid for a zero payment).

If you only know in 2016 that you have earned too much in 2015, you can stop your student finance with retroactive effect until 1 July 2016. The result is that you have to repay student finance for the months that have been withdrawn. You also have to pay € 194 per month for your student travel product.
